5.4 Inspo – Jamie Young, Goalkeeper for the Brisbane Roar

We had the great pleasure of meeting Jamie Young recently who is the goalkeeper for three-time A-League champions, the Brisbane Roar.

Jamie is Brisbane born and bred. He has spent more than fourteen years playing professional football in England before returning home to play for the Brisbane Roar.

Meet Jamie!

Tell us a bit about yourself Jamie …

I am a goalkeeper for the Brisbane Roar. Before that, I have played football professionally in England for 14 years (Reading FC, Wycombe Wanderers FC, Rushden and Diamonds FC, Aldershot Town FC). In that time I completed a Bachelors of Sport Science (Hons.) and am a qualified Certificate III Personal Trainer. I am currently studying my second degree at Uni of Qld in Health Sciences. I also have coached goalkeeping locally around Brisbane including at several schools, clubs, and privately.

I represented England between U/17’s-U/20’s (teammates included: Wayne Rooney, Gary Cahill, James Milner).

I am an ambassador with for MDA’s “Create Welcome” campaign, which looks at raising awareness for Refugees and people seeking asylum in arriving to Queensland.

Tell us more about “#CreateWelcome” Jamie …

#CreateWelcome is a social media campaign spearheaded by non-government organisation MDA.  It allows people to post and share messages of support for refugees and asylum seekers, primarily on Instagram.

I’m an ambassador for the campaign and it has given me a chance to learn more about the issues facing asylum seekers and to raise my own awareness.  It has allowed me to actually see what people are going through in their lives outside of football.


The movement aims to shift attitudes to acceptance and more understanding of asylum seekers and it has received overwhelmingly positive reception.  A lot of what I’ve seen online through social media has been very positive and for me to be a part of that is fantastic.

People need to remember the humanity of the issue.  There’s actually people who genuinely need help and that’s maybe what we don’t see on TV or radio.

I’m of Scottish and Sri Lankan descent and I can see how fortunate I am to be born in Australia.  I realised first and foremost that I’m really lucky to be born in a country where you’re treated exceptionally well in relation to other countries and second of all you realise that there are people in other countries who are treated extremely poorly and have had to flee those countries.

What was the moment you were inspired to get fit and healthy?

Having played sport from a young age, I’ve always been interested in being fit and healthy. For me it’s a way of life.

What advice would you give to guys and girls who want to live a happier and healthier life?

I think most people who want to achieve health and happiness expect it to happen straight away or they don’t know how to attain it. Therefore, I say if you can’t see yourself doing it in 10 years time, then don’t do it. For me, changes come from lifestyle habits and not short-term fixes like meal replacement shakes etc.

Setting short and long term goals is a way of identifying the path I’d like to go and finding out how to get there. Being open minded and willing to change in order to produce different results is key.

From a work perspective it is to obviously to represent the Brisbane Roar. However, a lot of my health and fitness goals is to maintain good health and to enjoy exercise. Trying to reinforce my strengths and work on my weaknesses.

What does a typical day look like for you?

We can often train twice a day: Morning football training (1-2 hours duration), followed by strength and conditioning in the afternoon (1 hour long).

What do you prefer, cardio or weights?

Weights, but I do like cardio.

Fav 5.4 meal?

Chicken Pesto.

Favourite cheat meal?

Gourmet Pizza.

I’m my happiest when …

I accomplish the goals I set myself. Attainment is what drives me.

The one thing I’m trying really hard right now to do is …

Listening and learning whether it be from a coach’s instructions, or something related to science.

I stay true to myself when …

I am focussed on achieving the goals that I set.


The most important message you would like to share with the 5.4 fam re their health and fitness is …

Attaining health and fitness doesn’t mean you have to break a world record in strength training. It can be whatever you want it to be, from being social to just being able to run a few laps around a park.

For me health and fitness should always have a positive impact on your life and be enjoyable.
